Chapter 34
by LhaoziChapter 34: Don’t Make Me Worry
At 1:00 AM, Qin Xi took a few sips of water from the pond inside her system space.
Right now, when drinking the pond water for the first time each day, it still carried the effect of restoring mental strength.
Although it could only restore ten percent, having a little was better than nothing at all.
By this time, the iron ore Qin Xi had mined had already reached one and a half tons.
The three-ton requirement for the system task was halfway completed.
She shook her aching wrists; though exhausted, she gritted her teeth and still wanted to finish up this task tonight as quickly as possible.
Unexpectedly, just as she picked up the hammer and chisel once more within her mental realm, she suddenly felt her shoulder nudged gently.
Withdrawing from the system space in an instant, her gaze focused, meeting Qin Song’s tightly knit brow:
“Big Brother?”
Qin Xi spoke in a quiet voice, assuming Qin Song had something to tell her.
Qin Song, however, merely looked at her with a calm gaze and said:
“Continue tomorrow. It’s time to sleep!”
Qin Xi froze, blinking her eyes, only to realize that Bai Hanyue, Lin Xin, and Li Zekai had all returned to the east bedroom to get ready for sleep as well.
During the first half of tonight, those three had heeded Qin Xi’s advice and spent the whole time making food.
Aside from baking flatbreads, they had also steamed a pot of mantou buns.
Li Zekai had even used glass canning jars to pickle several jars of salted vegetables using cucumbers and cowpeas from the vegetable garden.
Qin Xi tasted a few bites and found that the flavor was actually quite great. Hearing that Qin Xi loved sweet and sour pickled garlic, he had specially used garlic from the garden to pickle two jars for her.
This left Qin Xi quite pleased.
Although she had bought plenty of pickled vegetables—including sweet and sour garlic—when hoarding supplies beforehand, these were after all an expression of his goodwill.
For the sake of these two jars of sweet and sour garlic, Qin Xi took the initiative to propose using her spatial dimension to help store several days’ worth of food for them.
However, it was limited to what was made today; any more than that would be off-limits.
Even so, this already made the three of them overjoyed.
After all, carrying so much food on their backs was not only heavy, but also very easy to spoil.
At this moment, Qin Xi looked at the three exhausted faces, then looked over at Qin Song, her mind secretly pondering that she could lie under her quilt in a bit and continue working on the task.
The girl before him kept her eyes lowered, her long eyelashes veiling the flowing light in her eyes, yet failing to hide her little scheme.
A fleeting look of helplessness flashed across Qin Song’s face. He deliberately reined in his expression, looking at Qin Xi with a stern gaze, leaning close to her to lower his voice:
“It’s already very late. You need to maintain your physical stamina and mental energy. There are still two days left before the task deadline—don’t lose the big picture over small gains. Go to sleep now.”
Hearing this, Qin Xi pursed her lips and raised her eyes to meet Qin Song’s gaze, her face filled with the unwillingness of being caught red-handed. Just as she was about to say something, the man interrupted her again:
“No sneaking around doing tasks under the quilt. Xixi, don’t make me worry!”
The words Qin Xi wanted to say got stuck right in her throat!
She couldn’t bear to hear Qin Song speak like that.
Just like how she never dared to ask about the details before Qin Song’s ultimate death in their past life!
And so, she nodded obediently.
Tonight, all five people slept in the east bedroom.
Before going to sleep, Qin Song assigned the night-watch rotation for the five of them.
Tonight, he and Lin Xin would watch the first half of the night, Bai Hanyue and Li Zekai would watch the second half, while Qin Xi’s turn would fall on tomorrow night.
Qin Song couldn’t claim he had no selfish motives in dividing it this way.
He genuinely wanted to let Qin Xi get a bit more sleep!
Heavy curtains were drawn over both the main and side windows of the east bedroom.
The room lights were turned off, leaving only a dim yellow night-light on.
Before falling asleep, Qin Xi pulled out a few cans of drinks, mint candies, and several books.
These were all for the night-watchers to kill time with, as sitting idly made it very easy to fall asleep.
This was also experience drawn from her past life.
The moment her head hit the pillow, she completely threw her previous thoughts of continuing tasks under the quilt to the back of her mind, immediately drifting off into dreamland.
When she woke up early the next morning, Qin Xi opened her eyes to see Qin Song’s quiet, sleeping face right in front of her.
The light outside the window remained gloomy, and the night-light—having stayed on all night—was running out of battery.
The faint orange glow fell across the man’s handsome face, his tall bridge of the nose casting a deep shadow over his profile.
It was exceptionally pleasing to the eye.
As expected, Big Brother is indeed the most perfect man in this world!
Qin Xi thought to herself with a bit of pride, then checked the time inside her system space.
It was just 6:00 AM.
Instead of rushing to get up, she checked the situation inside her space.
The wheat had already reached the jointing stage, currently displaying the words “Awaiting fertilization.”
Meanwhile, the corn stalks in the cornfield had grown to half a person’s height, displaying the two prompts: “Awaiting tilling” and “Awaiting watering.”
When stocking up at the wholesale market, Qin Xi had bought some chemical fertilizer as well, which happened to come in handy now.
It was just that the quantity wasn’t large.
While fertilizing the wheat field, she thought to herself that it seemed she would need to search for more chemical fertilizer around the village.
Otherwise, if future system rewards still consisted of land, she would definitely need to plant crops on them.
Chemical fertilizer could not be in short supply!
Finishing the fertilization, Qin Xi temporarily set aside the cornfield situation, withdrew from the system space, and climbed out from under her quilt.
The moment she moved, Qin Song beside her opened his eyes right away.
Seeing this, Qin Xi quickly shook her head at Qin Song.
Although she didn’t speak, Qin Song quickly caught her meaning—it was still early.
So he didn’t fuss and continued sleeping.
After all, under such circumstances, being able to sleep a bit more meant cultivating better mental energy!
At the same time, sitting on the sofa on the floor, Bai Hanyue and Li Zekai noticed Qin Xi’s movements as well.
The two looked over one after another. Qin Xi raised her index finger to her lips, letting out a soft “Shh.”
Bai Hanyue and Li Zekai nodded in understanding.
Qin Xi put on her shoes and walked over to the two of them. She checked the expressions on their faces; Li Zekai was alright, but Bai Hanyue’s face carried obvious signs of drowsiness.
She then spoke softly:
“It’s still early. You two go catch a bit more shut-eye! I’ll keep watch here!”
Hearing this, the two exchanged a look before Bai Hanyue spoke first:
“I’ll go heat up some breakfast first and let it simmer in the pot. Once everyone gets up later, it’ll be ready to eat!”
Qin Xi looked at her upon hearing that.
Bai Hanyue was three years younger than her current age, yet unexpectedly mature and sensible.
Even having experienced such failed interpersonal relationships, the girl’s sincere words right now still brought a bit of cheer to Qin Xi’s mood.
It also made her willing to offer a bit of goodwill that didn’t involve deeper secrets:
“No need, I’ll make it in a bit. You two hurry and rest—I’ll call you once it’s ready!”
Qin Xi’s voice was firm and allowed no refusal, yet carried an implicit gentleness.
Dazzled by this gentleness, Li Zekai felt his face warm up slightly, the tips of his ears quietly turning red.
Beside him, Bai Hanyue had already agreed and was walking toward the brick kang.
Li Zekai met Qin Xi’s bright, clean eyes and rubbed his nose in embarrassment:
“Alright then. Miss Qin, if anything happens, feel free to call me… call us anytime!”
Qin Xi nodded upon hearing that.
No one noticed that under the dim light, Qin Song’s brows knitted tightly in an instant the moment he heard Li Zekai’s sentence!
