Chapter 24: Adapt as Quickly as Possible

Qin Xi stored the off-road SUV back into her spatial dimension, preparing to enter the office building.

After stepping out of the car, Bai Hanyue had remained standing on the other side of the vehicle.

Seeing the brother and sister whispering to each other, she hadn’t walked over.

Noticing the two move now, she walked up and asked:

“Are you going inside the office building?”

Qin Xi nodded, making up an excuse:

“To see if there’s anything useful left inside the building.”

Hearing this, Bai Hanyue bit her lower lip, but still stepped forward to follow them.

She needed to seize the opportunity while protected by these siblings to practice her courage and ability to kill zombies.

Otherwise, when they no longer brought her along, she wouldn’t have anyone to rely on!

The main entrance of the office building wasn’t closed.

As the three stepped up the stairs, a bloody mess came into view.

On the floor by the doorway, a massive pool of blood lay spilled, not even dried yet.

With a single glance, Bai Hanyue couldn’t help dry-heaving!

Qin Xi glanced at her from the side, patted her shoulder, and said softly:

“You need to adapt as quickly as possible. Let’s go, get inside!”

Qin Xi thought she needed to pick up the pace.

Since the task was to rescue Li Zekai, the probability was high that his current situation was extremely dangerous.

Qin Xi certainly didn’t want the duck in her hand to fly away!

Stepping around the large pool of blood on the floor, the three walked into the building.

The first floor was dead quiet; however, from the second floor, a faint “thud-thud-thud” sound echoed.

It sounded remarkably like something bashing against a door.

Qin Xi and Qin Song exchanged a glance, immediately running upstairs.

Bai Hanyue followed closely by their side. Reaching the second-floor stairwell, Qin Xi looked toward the direction of the noise from around the corner.

With just a single glance, her heart sank!

    Two zombies!

But that wasn’t the main issue—the main issue was that there was also a zombie hound!

It was a mutated Doberman; its naturally muscular body was drenched in blood.

Along with the two zombies bashing against the door, it was continuously slamming its head against the door as well.

That wooden door didn’t look sturdy; right now, it could even be seen starting to come loose!

    This was somewhat tricky!

Qin Xi’s gaze fixed tightly on that zombie hound.

This creature was far more nimble than human zombies.

One could say that when facing these mutated animals, the chance of getting injured would increase by three times compared to facing human zombies!

Right at this moment, Qin Song’s lowered voice came from above her head:

“I’ll handle the zombie hound; you two take care of the zombies!”

Qin Xi was about to object immediately, but Qin Song pressed her shoulder:

“The situation is urgent, don’t argue—I have a way!”

As he spoke, the longsword originally held in his hand gradually melted into his palm.

Following that, a metallic wire a few millimeters thick gradually emerged from his palm.

The metallic wire grew longer and longer, moving slowly across the floor as if possessing a life of its own, reaching all the way before the zombie hound.

At this point, the zombie hound finally sensed the existence of the metallic wire, lowering its head to look at the ground.

In the very next instant, however, the metallic wire—which had merely been lying flat on the floor—suddenly sprang up violently, plunging straight into the zombie hound’s skull.

Then, one end of the metallic wire shot upward, hoisting nearly the entire zombie hound into the air.

At the same time, sparks suddenly burst across its body with a loud crackle, causing the entire dog’s fur to explode outward!

In just a few short seconds, the zombie hound that had worried Qin Xi moments ago twitched its hind legs and ceased all movement!

Qin Xi froze on the spot in astonishment. In the next second, she looked at Qin Song with pleasant surprise:

“Big Brother, your supernatural ability upgraded?”

Otherwise, with a Level 2 ability, the metallic wire couldn’t possibly grow that long!

Qin Song lowered his eyes to look back at her with a smile, his words carrying deep meaning:

“Discovered it in the car. Today is the second day of the zombie outbreak.”

Qin Xi understood in an instant.

Perhaps due to certain environmental, magnetic, or energy changes today, this exact day in her past life had been when many people began sequentially awakening their supernatural abilities.

And in this life, Qin Song had returned with his supernatural ability intact.

When facing these changes in magnetic energy once more, his ability was still influenced, leading to a direct upgrade!

Given this, however, Qin Xi thought of the escaped Chen Liang, as well as Jiang Yaoyao far away in Shachen, who was particularly “mindful” of her.

She wondered what the situation was with those two right now!

For now, though, it wasn’t the time to dwell on these things—thinking about them wouldn’t yield answers anyway!

Looking at the zombies walking over after noticing people by the stairwell due to the commotion, Qin Xi raised her Standard Machete and stepped forward to face them.

At the exact same time, down at the foot of the mountain…

Inside the factory administrative building, a cruel slaughter was currently underway!

Those who were advanced in age or appeared disobedient were all bound behind their backs and pinned to the floor.

Meanwhile, those who were cut from the same cloth as this gang had already stepped into their ranks.

Wu Dongyan stood fawned beside the young man named Chen Liang.

Looking at the bound crowd before him, his gaze carried a sense of smug triumph!

Who could have expected that someone like him—who had always been looked down upon and lived cowardly in the past—would actually find his own value after the apocalypse!

    He actually learned magic, HAHAHAHA!

Even though Chen Liang said it was called a supernatural ability or whatever, the name didn’t matter!

He finally possessed a power that could surpass these people!

And this group of people who used to look down on him—always gossiping behind his back and acting rude to his face—now had to kneel before him, kowtowing and trying to cozy up to him just to stay alive!

He scanned the crowd with smug satisfaction, but as he looked, he suddenly realized something was wrong!

He felt as though someone was missing!

The joyful look on his face gradually faded, and his gaze searched through the crowd carefully once more, after which his expression suddenly shifted.

He felt somewhat hesitant about whether to tell Chen Liang.

After all, missing one person wasn’t a big deal, right?

Unexpectedly, Chen Liang turned his head right at this moment, catching the conflicted look on his face in an instant.

“Looking so grim—what, you have something else you’re hiding from me?”

Chen Liang’s voice was originally clear, but right now, perhaps mixed with a great deal of negative emotion, listening to it always made one feel an eerie chill!

Wu Dongyan shuddered all over, hurriedly waving his hands at Chen Liang:

“No, no! It… it seems like someone’s missing!”

“What?!” The burly man standing behind Chen Liang flew into a rage on the spot, raising his foot to kick straight at Wu Dongyan:

“It’s been so long! Why didn’t you say so earlier! What did they look like, what were they wearing?!”

Kicked to the floor, Wu Dongyan couldn’t get up for a long while. Lowering his head, a streak of dark resentment flashed across his eyes, though his words showed weakness:

“I… I only just noticed. A young boy, short hair, wearing a purple raincoat, holding a sickle.”

After listening, Chen Liang immediately ordered the people beside him:

    “Search the building—whether it’s a person or a zombie…”

Before he could finish his words, however, he paused suddenly.

Following that, he let out a light sigh, waving his hand at the crowd about to move:

    “Never mind!”

He suddenly turned around, looking at the short man who had just scrambled up and looked even more coweringly timid upon seeing him turn:

“Lead me to your village to find those few people.”

As he spoke, he walked slowly before Wu Dongyan, bending down with a terrifying smile on his face:

“If that boy running up to the village to report ruins my plans, then don’t expect to live either!”

Wu Dongyan collapsed flat onto the ground in an instant.

Meanwhile, on the mountain road at this very moment, a figure in purple was sprinting up the mountain against the pouring rain!

    • Duck in her hand (到手的鴨子 – dào shǒu de yā zi): A traditional Chinese idiom referring to a prize, opportunity, or benefit that is practically already secured (from the phrase “letting the cooked duck fly away”).
