Chapter 20: Do You Know Him? [1]

The road leading up the mountain was paved with asphalt, so under normal circumstances, driving up wasn’t particularly difficult.

Right now, however, the torrential rain poured down endlessly, with accumulated water streaming down the steep slope like a mountain brook.

In front of the car window, visibility was reduced to barely five meters.

Qin Song drove with extreme caution; he couldn’t go too fast, as he couldn’t see the road conditions clearly.

Yet he couldn’t go too slow either—the incline of the road was nearly forty-five degrees, and moving too slowly would mean failing to make the climb!

Sitting in the back seat and looking out at the curtain of rain, Qin Xi thought of her goal and asked Bai Hanyue:

“Do you know whose vegetable garden in the village grows the most crops, or who has fruit trees or flowers?”

Hearing this, Bai Hanyue froze for a second.

She looked at Qin Xi with a degree of caution:

“Are you going to the village to look for food and supplies?”

Qin Xi raised her eyes to look at her, easily reading the girl’s inner thoughts right off her face.

Bai Hanyue likely assumed that she and Qin Song were planning to take advantage of the chaos to scavenge supplies.

Still, it was entirely natural to have such thoughts.

After all, Bai Hanyue’s home was right there.

Considering that one’s family belongings might be swept away by outsiders, anyone would naturally feel unhappy about it.

With that in mind, Qin Xi gave her a reassuring smile and said:

“We are looking for some items, but don’t worry—we won’t snatch away your survival resources.”

Hearing Qin Xi put it like that, Bai Hanyue felt somewhat embarrassed and waved her hands repeatedly:

“No, no, that’s not what I meant! I was trying to say that if you’re looking for supplies, there are a few families in the village with vegetable greenhouses. It’s just that I don’t know the current situation of those homeowners—if they’re still at home, it wouldn’t be right for me to lead you there!”

Qin Xi understood Bai Hanyue’s meaning in an instant.

If the owners were still around and they went anyway, that would be stealing—that would be looting.

    She immediately nodded:

“I understand. We’ll play it by ear once we take a look.”

Speaking of which, she suddenly recalled the reason why Bai Hanyue wanted to come up the mountain, so she casually asked:

“By the way, you mentioned coming up here to seek revenge—what’s that about?”

To her surprise, Bai Hanyue’s voice instantly turned icy cold:

“That man is named Wu Dashan, a scumbag who harassed my older sister. My sister suffered a concussion from falling because of him, and instead of offering compensation, he spread yellow rumors [2] about her!”

Qin Xi’s body, which had been in a somewhat relaxed posture, stiffened in an instant!

She looked at Bai Hanyue in disbelief, confirming:

    “Wu Dashan?”

As soon as the words left her mouth, she swiftly exchanged a glance with Qin Song, who was driving up front, through the rearview mirror!

Was it the same Wu Dashan they knew?

Noticing the expressions on their faces, Bai Hanyue faintly sensed something.

Looking at Qin Xi, she asked tentatively:

    “Do you… know him [1]?”

A wave of fear suddenly washed over her.

If these two actually knew Wu Dashan and had some sort of connection with him, wouldn’t she be walking right into a trap?

Noticing Bai Hanyue’s tense emotions, Qin Xi snapped back to her senses and shook her head:

“No need to be nervous. We do indeed know a person named Wu Dashan, but just like you, he is purely an enemy to us. However, the one you’re talking about might not necessarily be the person we’re looking for.”

Upon hearing this, Bai Hanyue thought it over before speaking hesitantly:

“The one I know is 1.75 meters tall [3], slightly chubby, has naturally curly hair, and has a dimple pit on his chin!”

The expression on Qin Xi’s face gradually froze as Bai Hanyue described him.

    It really was him!

The look on her face turned cold immediately. After a few seconds, she said to Bai Hanyue:

“Very similar. Once we get there, we’ll see!”

Hearing this, Bai Hanyue nodded right away!

Her journey up the mountain had been a throw-caution-to-the-wind gamble from the start.

In any case, her parents were gone, and her sister had turned into a monster; she was all alone and didn’t know where her future lay anyway!

As for revenge, though she had decided to go, she hadn’t known whether she could actually pull it off.

Yet with these two added to the equation, she believed it would succeed one hundred percent!

If that was the case, even if it meant her death, she would accept it!

The vehicle continued all the way upward.

After driving for nearly twenty minutes along the mountain road with almost no turns, they finally reached the summit.

Before they could drive very far inward, Qin Xi immediately spotted zombies wandering around outside.

Qin Song parked the car at the village entrance, holding back from driving further inside for the time being.

Qin Xi pulled two pairs of binoculars out of her spatial dimension, handing one to Qin Song while keeping one for herself.

Raising the binoculars, she surveyed the situation inside the village.

Obscured by the heavy rain, visibility remained poor.

Nevertheless, one could still catch glimpses of zombie figures flashing past in the curtain of rain from time to time.

The numbers were truly quite large.

For now, however, Qin Xi turned her head to look at Bai Hanyue:

“First, head to Wu Dashan’s house. Do you know the way?”

    Bai Hanyue nodded immediately.

And so, the vehicle was started once more.

Qin Song drove rapidly along the village roads, plowing through an unknown number of zombies along the way before finally coming to a stop in front of a red-brick house.

The moment the car stabilized, Qin Xi stepped out of the vehicle.

She had already changed into a set of top-and-bottom rain gear—a raincoat and rain pants.

Wearing windproof goggles and a mask over her face while clutching the Standard Machete, she delivered a single slash right to the head of a zombie lunging at the car.

On the other side of the vehicle, what Bai Hanyue held in her hand was a length of steel rebar.

It was something she had picked up from someone’s front door when she fled down the mountain earlier.

Her movements in killing zombies—compounded by the heavy, wet rain—were still somewhat unpracticed.

Yet her mindset was remarkably composed!

She stood firm, watching the zombie approach step by step. The instant the zombie lunged forward, she bent her waist to dodge.

Then raising her hand, she aimed the steel rebar squarely at the back of the zombie’s skull, plunging it in with precise force!

Watching from the side, Qin Xi couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration.

To face a man-eating monster with such calmness right at the onset of the apocalypse meant this girl possessed an exceptionally powerful mindset.

If her character proved good as well, she might make a very capable team leader down the line.

At that thought, she suddenly shook her head.

Having served as a base leader for several years, she had picked up a bit of an occupational habit.

She hadn’t expected that even after being reborn, she would still habitually evaluate other people’s character and capabilities.

Observing these things now was no longer of much use!

Right as she was lost in thought, a hand suddenly landed on her shoulder!

Qin Xi raised her head sharply to see Qin Song—who had already changed into his raincoat—stepping out of the car as well.

With one hand resting on her shoulder, his eyes behind his windproof goggles looked at her with concern:

    “What’s wrong?”

Qin Xi shook her head quickly:

    “Just thought of something—it’s nothing!”

Hearing her response, Qin Song’s brows twitched faintly, but seeing that Qin Xi didn’t elaborate, he refrained from asking further.

The few zombies at the entrance had all been dealt with, though more zombies were gathering from the surrounding area.

Qin Xi stored the car away, and the three quickly entered the courtyard of the red-brick house. Behind them, Qin Song pulled the heavy iron gate shut.

Only the sound of rushing rain remained inside the courtyard!

The three turned their gazes simultaneously toward the main house, whose doors were tightly shut in dead silence.

Qin Song took the lead walking up, with Bai Hanyue in the middle and Qin Xi bringing up the rear.

She still needed to stay on guard in case Bai Hanyue harbored ill intentions, ensuring they wouldn’t be ambushed from behind.

Qin Song at the very front stood outside the house door, raising his hand to knock.

Suddenly, a faint “click” that sounded extraordinarily weak amidst the torrential downpour echoed out.

The tightly shut door shuddered slightly, pushed open from the inside.

A pale face slowly protruded out from behind the door!
