Chapter 28
by LhaoziChapter 28: The Trap
Qin Xi’s question was exceedingly sharp.
Lin Xin, who had yet to catch his breath, froze on the spot. Meeting the girl’s cool and composed gaze, he felt an unexpected surge of nervousness.
He stammered out:
“I… I have no way to prove it, but everything I said is… is true! When those people barged in, I was in the restroom, and I came down… came down from the restroom window by sliding down the pipe.”
As he spoke, he raised his hand to wipe the rainwater off his face, after which his words became considerably smoother:
“I admit, I came up here looking for you with selfish motives. I thought you guys were very strong, and I wondered if… if I could join your team? I can wait until a base is established to go to the base; I can also kill zombies, and I can find food on my own…”
Lin Xin’s words were laid out crystal clear.
When it came down to it, he simply wanted to find a few capable teammates to bolster his courage in such a terrifying environment.
If that was truly all there was to it, it was entirely blameless; what’s more, he had brought news of Chen Liang. Original translation by Lhaozi, read at lhaozitranslation.com
Still, words alone were not enough to make people trust him.
Qin Xi looked over at Qin Song.
Sensing her gaze, Qin Song’s eyes flickered slightly, and he asked Lin Xin:
“Do they know we are here?”
Perhaps not expecting the conversation to shift so abruptly, Lin Xin opened his mouth before replying:
“They probably don’t. Wu Dongyan just said you guys came up the mountain. I only came over because I spotted your car. However, they should be heading up soon!”
Qin Song nodded, turning back to look at Qin Xi:
“Make preparations first.” Original translation by Lhaozi, read at lhaozitranslation.com
Qin Xi’s brow twitched, understanding Qin Song’s intent instantly.
Regardless of whether Lin Xin’s words were true or false, it was certain that Chen Liang had undoubtedly come looking for them!
In that case, it had to be resolved and faced head-on anyway.
Before that, however, Qin Song searched Lin Xin’s person first.
He needed to confirm that there were no electronic devices or other items on his body that could be used to leak information to Chen Liang.
Even though it was the apocalypse, some electronic devices were still functional right now.
Bai Hanyue and Li Zekai, standing nearby, also roughly understood the current situation.
Seeing this, Li Zekai suddenly spoke up: Original translation by Lhaozi, read at lhaozitranslation.com
“Further up this mountain, in that nursery plot, there’s a single-story house. Someone used to live there, but after that plot of land was rented out, it’s been vacant. We can head over there.”
Qin Xi’s eyes lit up upon hearing this—that worked out perfectly.
Up on the mountain, the terrain was elevated, making it ideal for observing the situation below.
And so, the group immediately headed up the mountain.
The small path leading up the mountain lay right inside the nursery stock base, paved with concrete.
Ten minutes later, the five arrived outside that single-story house.
The house had no courtyard wall, opening directly to the front door; the door was tightly shut, and the window panes were old-fashioned blue glass.
Beside the main house was a side room, which also appeared completely empty when looking through its window. Original translation by Lhaozi, read at lhaozitranslation.com
Using his metallic supernatural ability, Qin Song unlocked the main house door.
The group stepped inside.
Qin Xi, however, did not go in.
Squatting on the slope in front of the house, she used her binoculars to observe the situation below.
The village road was dead quiet, save for the pouring torrential rain.
Qin Xi took a deep breath, mulling over how to deliver a fatal blow to Chen Liang’s gang in one swift stroke!
According to Lin Xin, Chen Liang’s team had already expanded to over a dozen people.
Even if these people lacked supernatural abilities, she and her big brother were only two individuals. Original translation by Lhaozi, read at lhaozitranslation.com
Although Bai Hanyue and the other two were present, Bai Hanyue and Li Zekai were ordinary people after all.
Killing zombies still required mental preparation for them; asking them to go directly to kill humans right now would likely be even harder, and might even spoil the opportunity.
What’s more, Lin Xin was a person who could not be fully trusted just yet.
As for her and Qin Song, two pairs of hands would have a hard time fighting against four.
Compounded by the fact that Chen Liang had likely brought his supernatural ability back as well, facing them head-on wouldn’t yield a high chance of victory.
While she was lost in thought, Qin Song walked over to her side as well.
He squatted down beside Qin Xi, the heavy rain pelting against his raincoat with a loud crackle.
Qin Xi turned her head to look at him: Original translation by Lhaozi, read at lhaozitranslation.com
“Big Brother?”
Qin Song let out an “Mm,” pulled a handkerchief out from somewhere, reached over to wipe the rainwater off Qin Xi’s face, and pulled the hood over her head forward a bit.
Qin Xi let the man tend to her face, though her mind was still focused on the upcoming plan:
“Big Brother, with over a dozen people, we need to find a way to split them up.”
Unexpectedly, upon hearing her words, Qin Song shook his head:
“No need!”
Qin Xi’s eyes widened slightly. Taking the handkerchief from Qin Song’s hand, she wiped her face with it, then casually wiped a few times across the man’s face as well, asking in confusion:
“Why? What are you planning to do?” Original translation by Lhaozi, read at lhaozitranslation.com
She then saw a gentle smile appear on the man’s face:
“We collected so much fuel and gas—pull out a little bit and blow them all up together!”
Qin Xi froze for two seconds, her eyes brightening up.
Right at that moment, several small black dots suddenly appeared on the distant village road!
Qin Xi hurriedly raised her binoculars, looking off in that direction.
She saw a total of three vehicles—an SUV, a minivan, and a box truck—driving up sequentially from the foot of the mountain.
The vehicles drove straight toward the direction of the village.
Handing the binoculars to Qin Song, Qin Xi spoke softly: Original translation by Lhaozi, read at lhaozitranslation.com
“I wonder if Wu Dashan’s corpse has been eaten clean yet. If not, he’ll quickly discover that we were there!”
“It doesn’t matter.”
Using the binoculars to monitor the movements of the distant convoy, Qin Song’s voice remained calm throughout:
“As long as we set up the trap before they get here, that’s all that matters!”
He looked at Qin Xi, their eyes meeting. Qin Xi raised an eyebrow:
“We can wait for them to appear inside the building and then teleport out.”
Qin Song flashed an approving gaze.
Qin Xi then bent her waist, preparing to stand up, saying: Original translation by Lhaozi, read at lhaozitranslation.com
“I’ll go inside the house first to coordinate with the three of them.”
Unexpectedly, Qin Song raised his hand, tapping her shoulder, his voice somewhat muffled in the rain:
“No need. When I walked out earlier, I already told them—this matter has nothing to do with them. We’ll do it ourselves!”
Qin Xi froze for a second, then nodded her head slowly.
The two hurried back down the mountain along the small mountain path.
The mountain path was overgrown with half-human-tall mugwort brush; bending their waist slightly, their figures were completely obscured from view.
Arriving at the main entrance of the office building, Qin Song used his metallic supernatural ability to pry open the door.
The two stepped into the building, quickly running through both floors. Original translation by Lhaozi, read at lhaozitranslation.com
As previously anticipated, there was no one inside the building.
Qin Xi pulled a fuel storage tank out from her spatial dimension. While Qin Song made arrangements inside the building, she ran up to the rooftop to observe the movements in the village.
After entering the village, the convoy quickly vanished among the rows of houses.
Now, twenty minutes later, the convoy suddenly reappeared, driving out along the village road, then making a sudden turn toward this direction at the fork!
Qin Xi’s spirits jolted. Getting up immediately, she bent low and ran down the stairs from the rooftop.
The building was already thick with the smell of gasoline.
She stored the fuel tank on the first floor back into her space and nodded at Qin Song.
The two did not leave immediately. Original translation by Lhaozi, read at lhaozitranslation.com
Instead, they found a room right on the first floor near the entrance, quietly awaiting the arrival of Chen Liang!
